Pets@Rice

Welcome

We at Rice are happy that our Houston neighbors enjoy the beauty of the university’s 300-acre campus arboretum and find it a relaxing place for a family stroll. We hope you will return to the campus often to visit the Rice University Welcome Center in Lovett Hall, tour our many installations of public art or enjoy the educational, cultural and recreational programs sponsored yearly for the benefit of the community (to sign up for Welcome, a weekly email digest of Rice public events, please visit rice.edu/neighbor).

Student with dog

With regard to four-footed family members, we offer this reminder that Rice is obliged to enforce city ordinances regarding leash use and pet waste pick up as well as campus regulations that prohibit dogs on campus playing fields and in classrooms and dining and event venues* (additional details below).

We appreciate your assistance in setting a good example for other pet owners through your responsible behavior, and hope that you and your pet enjoy your visits to Rice.

Again, welcome.

Area Pet Resources:

Pet Watering Stations
Water fountains with pet-level fixtures are provided along the campus perimeter sidewalk on University Blvd. near Montclair and on Sunset Blvd. near campus Gate 27A.

Nearest Area Dog Parks
Looking for a fenced area where your pet can legally run, off-leash? These are the closest city of Houston dog parks:

*Only trained service animals, as defined by Texas law and the Americans with Disabilities Act, are permitted on campus athletic and recreation fields and in classrooms and dining and event venues.

When not behind a fence or wall that prevents “running at large,” dogs must be kept on leashes, and under direct, physical control.

When pets are on property that does not belong to their owners, those owners must arrange to pick up after their animals. [Rice’s brown metal outdoor waste bins may be used to dispose of bagged droppings].
